Too Rock n Roll For The Whisky
SEE THE PHOTOS FROM ROCK CAMP!!
I lived to tell the tale of my first experience as Rock Star Counselor for Rock n Roll Fantasy Camp and even got thrown out of the Whisky after the gig! Yes! But let’s go back to the start. I had the only band of teenage campers in the place and let me tell you… they rocked! Ricky from Chattanooga on guitar is 16 and lives to play that geetar. He gave a lesson to a fellow camper…. a 47 year old camper and helped him figure out a guitar solo. How cool is that? Joey (14) and Jimmy (15) from Cleveland are brothers and play drums and guitar and I think they are perhaps the sweetest and hardest working musicians! They were so dedicated. Wow. Nick (18) from Talent, Oregon won a contest to be at the camp and surprised everyone with his prowess and natural ability on drums. Then he surprised us more by telling us he didn’t actually own a drum set! Finally, Dani (16) on vocals from Malibu. Not only can she sing… she can also play guitar, drums, bass and she probably plays keys too. Oh did I mention she is one helluva performer too? Wow. Yeah. My band had chops! I had a blast being their bass player!
My band, “Share’s Band on the Run” recorded at Capital on Saturday and was produced by Eddie Kramer. The band did a terrific job in the studio and I was sooo proud of them! Not an easy task when you’ve never recorded before and suddenly you’re in a giant room with headphones on and a big name producer telling you what to do!
Hangin’ out and getting to know Alan White and Elliot Easton was fantastic. Seeing Kip Winger who Vixen toured with back in the day… and Bruce Kulick who I know from Hollywood hangs and Teddy Zigzag who the Dogs toured with 4 years ago… was a blast. Also found out that Sandy Gennaro and I played together after Vixen broke up. He reminded me that we actually had a band with Janet on vocals and a guitar player and we were called Renegade. None of us can remember what happened!?!!!
Oh, as for getting tossed out of the club. Yeah. Well, the Whisky is pretty lame anyway and anyone who’s ever played there will tell ya they kinda suck! LOL! The only bummer was that I missed the counselor jam and didn’t get to play with all those cats. But hey… somebody had to be rock n roll right???? We were all waaaaaay too nice!
All in all, it was a blast and a life changing experience. I loved everyone I met… Ally from Ukraine, Debbie, Lee, Natalie, Tony who just served in Iraq, Tony’s son, Francesca, Lindsay, Tom Repetny from the Mancow show (dude, you rock so hard), and so many many more. Of course there are the people who make it all happen from David Fishoff the impresario to Bradley who spreads his love and charm everywhere he goes to Courtney who kept it all organized and Tiffany our band manager who came up and sang bv’s onstage at the Whisky! What an amazing time. If I left anyone out, you can kick my ass the next time I see you but know you’re in my heart forever.
